The Diploma will provide you with a strong foundational knowledge of criminal behaviour and the workings of the criminal mind. The student will develop an understanding of the major theories that seek to explain criminal behaviour especially in relation to violent and sexual crimes. Students who complete the course will understand the interface between the legal system and psychology and in doing so enhance the recognition of forensic psychology as a distinct specialism of psychology.
Forensic psychology is the juncture between psychology and the legal system. It involves understanding the fundamental principles of law, particularly with regard to expert witness testimony and the specific content area of concern, in order to be able to interact appropriately with judges, attorneys and other legal professionals. An important aspect of forensic psychology is the ability to testify in court as an expert witness, reformulating psychological findings into the legal language of the courtroom, providing information to legal personnel in a way that can be understood.In order to be a credible witness the forensic psychologist must understand the rules, and standards of the judicial system.
