Unit 1 – Core Reading

These readings lay the groundwork for everything else in this course. You start with the core shift trauma-informed care asks of you — from asking what’s wrong with someone to asking what happened to them — then move through the principles that put it into practice, and the research that gave the whole approach its scientific footing. Read them in order if you can — each one builds a little on the last.

This second set goes a step further, sharpening a few distinctions that are easy to blur once the basic idea has landed. You'll see how trauma-informed practice differs from trauma-specific treatment, why practitioners work from an assumption that trauma may be present even when it hasn't been disclosed, and finally, the myths worth clearing up before you move into Unit 2. Same as before — read them in order, since each one leans on what came just before it.
